A deep plane facelift is a full facelift procedure that lifts below the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) to tighten the skin and muscle tissue of the face at the same time.
By going to the “deep plane” without separating the skin and SMAS, deep plane facelifts can achieve significant reductions in wrinkles, sagging skin, and creases along the cheeks and nose; all while preserving the natural connections between the skin and the SMAS.
While deep plane facelifts are a more invasive surgery than traditional SMAS facelifts, the preservation of the connection between the skin and the SMAS can improve natural-looking outcomes without a significant increase in recovery times (typically less than a week longer). For skilled surgeons like Dr. Ritu Chopra at the Plastic Surgery Institute in Beverly Hills deep plane facelifts are the preferred facelift method to maximize the impact of the procedure while preserving your natural look and expressions.

We understand that you may want to consider nonsurgical options to restore your more youthful, refreshed look. We offer minimally invasive procedures that be performed in conjunction with other facelift options or by themselves.
NANO FAT FACE LIFT
As we get older, we can experience loss of subcutaneous fat tissue, creating looser, saggy skin that gives a more aged appearance. Nano fat transfer provides a minimally invasive treatment to improve the fullness of your skin when you’ve experienced a loss in volume. Our skilled professionals use the latest technology to help you renew your look by using small injections of reprocessed fat material from another area of your body, like your lower abdomen, hips, or thighs, to repair the more delicate areas of your skin. The outcome is a softer, rejuvenated appearance with little to no downtime. In addition, because it is your own tissue, it does not cause an allergic reaction and produces long-lasting results with no need for more complicated surgery.
STEM CELL FACE LIFT
Adult stem cells are your own natural, versatile substance that regenerates and repairs all areas of your body. Our experienced providers use the newest methods in a nonsurgical approach to manipulate these stem cells to restore your skin where it’s needed when it has experienced damage caused by age or the sun. This minimally invasive treatment acquires stem cells from other places like your abdomen, which are then injected precisely into the areas you want to correct. This natural treatment option has little to no downtime and can offer you an alternative to invasive surgeries while creating successful results you love.
The term deep plane facelift tends to be a little… intimidating. A deep plane facelift sounds more severe than, say, a mini-facelift, which is why many patients come to the Plastic Surgery Institute asking for mini-facelifts instead of deep plane facelifts. However, in the hands of a trained expert like Dr. Ritu Chopra in Beverly Hills deep plane facelifts can produce natural-looking and dynamic results that far exceed what can be done with a mini-facelift.
The biggest difference between deep plane facelifts and mini-facelifts lies in the extent of Dr. Chopra’s ability to tighten the skin while preserving your natural movement and facial expressions. With a mini-facelift, the incisions are made along the sides of the face, usually by the ears at the hairline. After that, the procedure is just like a traditional facelift. The SMAS and facial tissues are each lifted, stretched, and trimmed to create a more contoured look around the cheeks, neck, and jawline. The only thing “mini” about it is that it only treats the bottom half of the face; it is still an invasive surgical procedure and will require the appropriate recovery time.
In comparison, Dr. Chopra’s deep plane facelift allows him to lift the SMAS and skin of the upper, mid, and lower portions of the face; while preserving the connective tissue between them. This, in turn, preserves your existing facial expressions and ability to emote. It also prevents the “windblown” look of more superficial facelifts that just tighten the skin and not the musculature beneath it. There are, of course, certain situations where a mini-facelift is still preferable to a deep plane facelift. However, Dr. Chopra has found that in most cases, deep plane facelifts offer comparable recovery times to mini-facelifts with vastly superior results.
During your Beverly Hills deep plane facelift consultation, we will do a thorough evaluation of your face and neck to determine what areas are of greatest concern to you, and where you feel like you want correction. Dr. Chopra is an expert at tailoring his procedures to suit your needs. No two faces are the same, so no two deep plane facelifts are the same. Your procedure will be customized to your face to ensure the best possible outcome.
The results of a deep plane facelift are the most comprehensive of any facelift procedure. With a deep plane facelift you can expect to see:

Deep Plane Facelift Results
You will see immediate results as soon as you remove your bandages. However, swelling and bruising will prevent you from seeing your full results for a few weeks. It can take as long as three months for the “final” results of a deep plane facelift to settle.
The results of a deep plane facelift are permanent, but aging still happens. Typically, the skin starts to age about a decade after a deep plane facelift to the point where an additional correction may be needed. Lifestyle choices and a proactive care regimen can increase the longevity of these results.
Following your procedure, your face will be wrapped in a dressing and you will be monitored at our surgical center for a short time. In most cases, you will be discharged the same day. You will need someone to drive you home following the procedure, as you will be unable to focus on driving safely.
Deep plane facelifts will require some recovery time. Most patients take two to three weeks off work so they can focus on recovery. There will be bruising, swelling, and discomfort in the areas where your face has been repositioned. The bruising and discomfort will fade, but there may be some residual swelling for longer than two to three weeks. This is normal. Typically, after a deep plane facelift Beverly Hills patients recovery usually takes between one to three months.
