Sclerotherapy is a treatment for unwanted varicose and spider veins, with no downtime. Our injection specialist can treat the patient’s troublesome veins and restore the appearance of their body in a quick and easy session.
Sclerotherapy is an effective and minimally invasive treatment used to permanently eliminate varicose and spider veins. It is affordable and convenient, as it is able to be performed within an hour and without downtime. It is also more efficient and less painful than other treatment options.
At the Plastic Surgery Institute in Beverly Hills Sclerotherpy treatment consists of the injection of a sclerosant, an irritating chemical solution, directly into a spider vein or vericose vein. The sclerosant impairs the lining of the vessel and causes the blood to clot. This blood flow is cut off and the vessel swells. This ultimately causes the vein to disappear within the body without the possibility of returning and blood is redirected to healthier veins. It may take three to six weeks for spider veins and three or four months for varicose veins to respond to Sclerotherapy.

The treatment takes 15 minutes to an hour depending on the size and number of veins to be treated. Once the region is cleaned with alcohol, our Beverly Hills Sclerotherapy provider will use a very small needle to inject the sclerosing agent into the veins. Mild stinging can occur as the solution is injected. This stinging lasts one to two minutes.
The solution will take effect and cause the targeted vein to shut. Over the next few weeks the deactivated blood vessel will be absorbed into the body and disappear. After the treatment the practitioner will massage the area to disperse the solution and then ask the patient to stand up and walk around. In some cases, it may be recommended that a compression garment is recommended is worn for one week after treatment.
Recovery time includes little to no downtime with patients returning to their daily activities immediately after treatment. Smaller spider veins can take 3-6 weeks to disappear and larger veins 3-4 months. Patients can expect 50%-80% to disappear with each session. Since Sclerotherapy causes the veins to disappear into the body, results are permanent. However, multiple treatments may be needed depending on the number and severity of veins receiving Sclerotherapy.
While spider veins and varicose veins are both caused by the weakening of valves within the veins, they each have their own distinctive properties. As vein walls thin and weaken, valves are stressed and their function is impaired. As a result, blood pools inside in the vein and causes swelling.
Spider veins are smaller, flat, and painless, but are still generally unwanted for cosmetic reasons. This causes the vein to twist or bulge, and protrude from the skin. These are what we refer to as varicose veins. In addition to being aesthetically unpleasant, varicose veins may be uncomfortable, itchy, or painful. The condition of the veins which causes varicose and spider veins is called venuous insufficiency. Venuous insufficiency often occurs when the veins’ ability to easily push the blood upward in the leg has been compromised as a result of a sedentary lifestyle, age, or vascular defect.

While both methods are effective treatments for the appearance of veins, sclerotherapy is less painful and usually requires fewer treatments than laser therapy.
Your doctor may recommend that you wear a compression garment.
Sclerotherapy is not covered by insurance unless it is deemed a medically necessary procedure. In order to determine if vein quality is a health concern, an ultrasound may be performed. If varicose veins are impeding proper blood flow, sclerotherapy may be covered by insurance.
Sclerotherapy may cause pain, swelling, bruising, hyperpigmentation, a stinging sensation, or raised areas at sites of injection. Some side effects and complications which may require treatment are allergic reaction, blood clots, air bubbles, inflammation, nerve injury, or migraines.
Good candidates for Sclerotherapy are typically adults within the age of 30 to 60. Sclerotherapy is contraindicated for patients who have had issues with blood clots in the past and those who have recently been pregnant. Those with allergies to sclerosant should also not receive Sclerotherapy.
Patients should avoid significantly heating the treatment area after Sclerotherapy. Hot tubs, saunas, hot showers or baths, and heat compresses should be avoided, as well as direct sunlight and anti-inflammatory medication (such as Ibuprofen or aspririn). Strenuous cardio exercise should also be avoided for 48 hours, though walking is encouraged after treatment to support healing and circulation.
In very rare instances, 2 to 5% of the time, veins may return from previously treated veins. However, patients may reduce their chances of redevelopment of varicose and spider veins by simply maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Movement and exercise, weight management, and other generally healthy choices all contribute to a healthy vascular system and help to prevent other varicose veins from growing.
