The Plastic Surgery Institute offers IPL Photofacials in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, a treatment that improves the appearance of brown spots, dark spots, sunspots, rosacea, age spots, freckles, acne scars, broken capillaries, varicose veins, and skin texture via Intense Pulsed Light.
Your skin is your biggest organ, and it takes a beating on the daily. It isn’t uncommon to start to see signs of sun damage, even at a younger age. Various blemishes can disrupt your complexion, and cause dissatisfaction with the appearance of your skin. While these problems won’t go away on their own, a little help from the Plastic Surgery Institute can go a long way, which is why we offer our patients Beverly Hills IPL Photofacial treatments. IPL Photofacials help restore that youthful glow that shows the real you.
IPL stands for “Intense Pulsed Light”, a technology that is used to gently target the deep tissues under the skin and prompts the body to produce more collagen, a process that slows down with prolonged sun exposure and age. IPL energy can also be used to target the damaged, visible blood vessels and redness associated with rosacea to help clear the skin and clear redness.
Ideal candidates for IPL treatment are healthy adults with sun damage (brown spots, dull damaged skin), fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, spider veins, or rosacea. IPL is a versatile treatment that is appropriate for many potential patients but may not be right for everyone. It is most successful and safe when performed on fair-skinned individuals with good skin elasticity.
All potential candidates should have realistic expectations for the results of the procedure, and be willing to stick with the treatment schedule and aftercare required for the best results. At The Plastic Surgery Institute in Beverly Hills IPL Photofacial treatments are generally minimally invasive treatments that require little to no downtime. The first step in the process would be to schedule a consultation with The Plastic Surgery Institute to have a discussion with our expert cosmetic surgeons and licensed aestheticians to help customize the procedure to your own needs.
During your IPL Photofacial Beverly Hills aesthetic experts will provide you with special protective eyewear to protect your eyes from the light. Then, a cooling gel, which acts as a conductor for the laser, is placed on the treatment areas to keep your surface skin comfortable. The smooth glass surface of the handpiece is gently applied to your skin, and the intense pulses of light are delivered. Some patients report the process is not painful, but rather similar to a small rubber band being snapped on your skin with each light pulse. Typically performed without anesthetic, some patients with sensitive skin may request topical numbing cream. This can be discussed beforehand with your practitioner.
IPL Photofacials work via light being absorbed into the skin. The more intense nature of the IPL photofacial’s light pulses allows this light to be absorbed more deeply. IPL Photofacial light is soaked up by the hemoglobin (red blood cells) and melanin (pigmentation) in the skin, intentionally damaging these areas.
The damaged melanin breaks up and is absorbed by the skin, decreasing its appearance on the skin’s surface. The damaged hemoglobin stimulates blood flow, causing the melanin to be absorbed more efficiently.
Before the IPL treatment begins, the skin will be cooled in order to help prevent discomfort during the procedure. A handpiece is used to direct light pulses directly into the areas to be treated. Depending on the size of the treated areas, IPL sessions can usually be expected to last about 30-90 minutes.
Once the IPL Photofacial treatment is complete, usually in about 30-90 minutes, the physician will remove the gel, clean your skin, and apply a moisturizer. For larger treatment areas, we may apply a cold pack for 5-10 minutes after your session. Recovery time is little to none with some patients experiencing slight redness for 12-24 hours following treatment. Some sunspots and age spots may darken and crust 5-7 days after treatment. Most patients are able to return to their daily routine within a day post-treatment.
Post-treatment guidelines will be provided to the patient and sun exposure of the treated area needs to be avoided until completely healed. If sun exposure cannot be avoided we recommend using and reapplying sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher. Results with IPL are gradual over the course of several treatments. We typically recommend 4-6 treatments scheduled at 3-week intervals. However, our practitioner can customize a plan to address your specific areas of concern. With consistent treatments, following a skincare regimen, and protecting your skin from the sun, IPL photofacial results can last for up to a year.
