Skin Resurfacing procedures are best used to treat the results of natural elements such as the sun, birthmarks and other causes of skin discoloration. Ablative and non-ablative laser skin resurfacing methods offer a variety of benefits ranging from wrinkle reduction to skin brightening.
Some people may be insecure about facial wrinkles, scars, or pigment differentiation, but all of these can be removed by skin resurfacing.
Skin Resurfacing technology allows doctors to remove imperfections in the skin from targeted areas one layer at a time. At The Plastic Surgery Institute in Beverly Hills skin resurfacing is approached by utilizing several methods, each with their own specific benefits.
Dermabrasion refers to the use of an abrasive, rotating tool which essentially “sands” the outermost layer of skin. Through natural healing, new smooth skin replaces the damaged skin and the result is a rejuvenated, youthful appearance. Dermabrasion is used to treat a variety of conditions including wrinkles, scars, dullness, sun damage, rhinophyma, and unwanted tattoos.
Dermabrasion requires anesthesia and can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour. The type of anesthesia used and length of treatment vary greatly depending on the extent of treatment being performed. The treated skin will be covered with a dressing following treatment and you will receive instructions on post-treatment care. Most patients can return to work 2 weeks after treatment and are fully recovered in 4 to 6 weeks.
Dermaplaning is an exfoliating facial treatment in which a blade is used to carefully scrape away dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Dermaplaning leaves the skin smooth and revived.
Dermaplaning requires no downtime and presents an especially low risk of side effects in comparison to other treatments. Dermaplaning is convenient, safe, inexpensive, and effective. These factors make Dermaplaning an easy “lunch break” procedure. However, results are short-lived, only lasting about 3 weeks.
Clear + Brilliant is a fractional laser facial treatment used to prevent and reduce signs of aging. Patients usually report a noticeable change in about one week after treatment and can expect full results after 4 to 6 treatments, though many continue regular treatment to maintain their results.
Each treatment takes about half an hour and no downtime is needed following treatment. Result longevity varies between patients depending on the condition of their skin, their age, and how well they care for their skin in general. However, it is not uncommon for results to last for several months.
Learn MoreChemical peels consist of the application of a chemical solution (or several solutions) to the skin. The solution causes damaged skin to blister and eventually peel off, revealing new skin which is often brighter and smoother.
This treatment is commonly used on the face, neck, and hands to treat skin imperfections including wrinkles, scars, age spots, and some types of acne. It is an outpatient procedure, though a facial dressing may be required for several days. Recovery time varies depending on the depth of the procedure. Peeling and healing may take 3 to 7 days for milder peels or 7 to 14 days for deeper peels. Mild peels may be repeated in as little as 1 to 4 weeks, and deeper peels may only be repeated after 6 to 12 months.

An electrode resembling a needle is used to deliver a high-frequency electric current to unwanted tissue. The pointed tip of the electrode is used to puncture the lesion. This allows for deep penetration of the electrical impulse to the root of the growth. The growth may receive electrodessication more than once in a single treatment to ensure that all of the lesion’s tissue has been destroyed.
Remaining tissue may be also be cut out. The electrode is held over the lesion for several seconds while the electrical current heats up the moisture within the unwanted tissue, drying out and ultimately destroying it. The length of procedure and type of anesthesia used are dependent upon the number of lesions being treated and the patient’s condition. Following treatment, the patient will be instructed to apply healing ointment and moisturizer to the treated area for several days.
Fractional CO2 Laser therapy is an extremely effective and versatile method of skin resurfacing in which multiple layers of the skin are treated with a carbon dioxide laser beam.
Damaged and dead skin cells are removed from the surface while collagen production is boosted deeper within. Fractional CO2 Laser Therapy treats wrinkles, scars, discoloration, and age spots. One treatment is all that is needed, and usually takes an hour to 90 minutes. Recovery takes about 1 to 2 weeks, and results are long-lasting as collagen production will remain elevated for months or even years.
